Omron Foundation, Inc. Donates $50,000 to the American Red Cross for Hurricane and Mexico City Disaster Relief Efforts

September 27, 2017

HOFFMAN ESTATES, IL (August 30, 2017)—OMRON Foundation, Inc. is contributing $50,000 to the American Red Cross, working through the Mexican Red Cross (IFRC) to assist with Mexico City’s earthquake relief efforts and another $25,000 for current and future domestic hurricane relief.

The 2017 hurricane season has been among the most active on record: 11 hurricanes, with four classified as major—Category 3 or stronger.

In addition to the widespread devastation wrought by Hurricanes Irma and Maria to the Florida Keys, Puerto Rico, the U.S. Virgin Islands, and elsewhere, the 7.1 magnitude earthquake that hit Mexico City and other cities nearby on September 19 caused broad-scale damage to both the city’s infrastructure and population, with the death toll currently at 319.

These catastrophes come less than a month since Hurricane Harvey, which flooded the Houston area with nearly 65 inches of rain in one week—the most destructive storm to hit the region in decades. (The Omron Foundation assisted the people of Houston with a contribution toward Harvey relief efforts.)

“The Omron Foundation is dedicated to assisting the citizens of Mexico City, as well as those in our own country and territories, in this time of great need. With the Atlantic hurricane season only two-thirds over, our concern is not only to help stabilize the areas that have been affected by these recent natural disasters, but also to put funds there to assist in the event of any future such events this season,” said Nigel Blakeway, Omron Foundation President and CEO of Omron Management Center of America, Inc.

The Omron Foundation chose the American Red Cross based on the organization’s considerable experience and the scope of its relationships with professionals and agencies in the disaster response community, including Cruz Roja Mexicana (Mexican Red Cross), which operates the country’s ambulance services and are acknowledged as experts in search-and-rescue.

Omron encourages its employees to support natural disaster relief efforts with their individual donations which will be matched by the Omron Foundation.
